Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom tooth is the last tooth to grow in an individual’s mouth. Whenever a wisdom tooth does not have sufficient space to grow, it becomes infected. Also called an impacted wisdom tooth, the problem is a very painful one. Usually, the only treatment to an impacted wisdom tooth is extraction. For all those who live in Pune and wish to find the right place for wisdom tooth extraction, coming to Smile-Inn Dental Clinic might be the best choice. Let us discover why.

What Are Wisdom Tooth

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth, typically appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. They erupt behind your second molars and can sometimes cause various issues due to lack of space or improper positioning. This article explores everything you need to know about wisdom teeth, including their function, potential problems, and treatment options.

Information About Wisdom Teeth

  • Evolutionary History: The human jaw has become smaller over time due to dietary changes. Wisdom teeth, once crucial for grinding tougher foods, are often no longer needed.
  • Number: Most people have four wisdom teeth, one in each corner of the mouth (upper and lower jaw). However, it’s possible to have fewer, more, or none at all.
  • Eruption: Wisdom teeth may erupt normally, partially erupt, or remain completely impacted (stuck under the gum or bone).

Advantage

  • Chewing Function (if properly positioned): In some cases, wisdom teeth can contribute to proper chewing and grinding of food.
  • Replacement Teeth: In rare instances, wisdom teeth may serve as replacements for lost molars due to accidents or extractions.

Disadvantage

  • Impaction: Lack of space can cause wisdom teeth to become impacted, leading to pain, swelling, infection, and damage to surrounding teeth.
  • Alignment Issues: Improperly angled wisdom teeth can crowd other teeth, causing misalignment and bite problems.

Types Of Wisdom Teeth

  • Vertical: Eruption is blocked by bone tissue.
  • Mesioangular: Angled forward towards the front teeth.
  • Distoangular: Angled backward towards the back of the mouth.
  • Horizontal: Wisdom tooth lies flat in the jawbone.

Precautions for Wisdom Teeth

  • Regular Dental Checkups: Routine dental exams and X-rays allow dentists to monitor wisdom tooth development and identify potential problems early on.
  • Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brushing and flossing properly can help prevent gum disease and infection around wisdom teeth.
  • Early Intervention: If your dentist identifies potential issues, early intervention may be recommended to prevent future complications.

Look at the symptoms before getting wisdom tooth extraction

Are you not sure if your wisdom tooth needs to be extracted? Look for the below given symptoms before you go for a wisdom tooth extraction.

  • Your gums are looking red and/or swollen. Impacted wisdom teeth can inflame the area around them and cause swelling in gums.
  • You notice bleeding and tenderness in the gum around the wisdom tooth.
  • Your jaw hurts or there is swelling around the jaw.
  • There is an unpleasant taste in your mouth and your breath smells bad.
  • You are facing problems in opening and closing your mouth or chewing food.

If you notice a number of these problems then think about getting a wisdom tooth extraction. In case you only have one or two of these symptoms, you may not need a wisdom tooth extraction but there might be some other problem.

FAQs

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to erupt, usually between ages 17 and 25. Due to limited space, they can become impacted, causing pain, swelling, or infection.
Common signs include swollen gums, jaw pain, difficulty chewing, bad breath, and an unpleasant taste. If you experience several of these symptoms, an extraction may be necessary.
Impacted wisdom teeth can be vertical, mesioangular (angled forward), distoangular (angled backward), or horizontal (lying flat), each with unique extraction challenges.
Regular dental checkups, good oral hygiene, and early intervention if advised by your dentist can help manage or prevent wisdom tooth issues.
With modern anesthesia options like IV sedation, wisdom tooth removal is typically painless, and any post-procedure discomfort is manageable with medication.

I had intended to leave a negative review because there were some serious communication problems and misinformation given to me by the lady on the phone which was very frustrating. BUT everything turned out ok.. I can’t fault the dentist, she was lovely, gave very thorough explanations and advice and she did a great job on my teeth.

I can't speak highly enough about Dr Shaveta and Dr Nick. They saved my back molar with root canal treatment when everybody else wanted to pull the tooth. Their staff, including Tracy, are so warm and welcoming. I have found a dentist for life! Absolutely wonderful dentists!
