Dental Anxiety

One in seven Australians are afraid of seeing a dentist. At Your Family Dentist, our friendly dental staff is well-trained to dispel dental phobia with sedation dentistry. Are you ready to witness anxiety-free dentistry?

What is IV sedation dentistry?

IV (intravenous) sedation helps to relax patients during dental procedures. This overcomes the problem of dental anxiety, which can be a major obstacle to getting crucial oral health care.

IV sedation dentistry is a form of moderate, conscious sedation. This means you stay awake but feel drowsy. You’ll be less aware of the dental environment around you and what your dentist is doing, although you’re still able to interact with them.

Unlike inhalation sedation – nitrous oxide (happy gas) – and oral sedation – taking a pill ahead of treatment – IV sedation is administered through a vein (in the back of the hand or in your arm).

Benefits of IV sedation

IV dental sedation provides several advantages for nervous patients.

  • It works fast.
  • It minimises discomfort.
  • Your dentist can easily monitor your vital signs and adjust dosage.
  • You’re unlikely to remember much if anything about the procedure afterwards.
  • You’re able to undergo multiple procedures in one appointment.

IV sedation can make it easier to get treatment if you’re apprehensive about a procedure such as getting dental implants, having a tooth removed, or having root canal work.

If you’re anxious about dental visits in general, your dentist may recommend IV sedation for routine procedures such as cleanings.

Could I benefit from IV sedation?

IV sedation has benefited many people who would otherwise fail to get the dental care they need because the mere thought of stepping inside a dental clinic triggers strong feelings of anxiety or even dread.

IV sedation dentistry may also be right for you if you have:

  • A sensitive mouth.
  • Strong gag reflex.
  • Resistance to local anaesthetic.
  • A general anxiety disorder.
  • A phobia about dental procedures.

When considering IV sedation, your dentist will make sure it’s safe for you by assessing your health. This will include asking about your medical history and whether you’re taking any medications.
