Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom tooth can sometimes be a massive jab in the jaw. Get it extracted today without an iota of pain, hassle, or mess, at Your Family Dentist.

Wisdom teeth removal

Wisdom teeth extraction can avoid multiple future complications. Ninety percent of us don’t have room in our mouth for wisdom teeth, which means they can create oral havoc.

These teeth often emerge misaligned and crowd other teeth. Or they stay wholly or partially buried inside the gum (impacted).

This is why wisdom teeth removal has become standard practice recommended by dentists to protect long-term oral health by preventing further issues.

During the procedure you can relax and view a film of your choosing from our library on the overhead TV, or listen to music in earphones as we carry out your treatment. And you will feel at ease and virtually pain-free with the benefit of dental sedation, which is quickly eliminated from the body after treatment, allowing you to be alert and able to drive by the time you leave.

Signs of wisdom teeth infection

Infection may develop in the area where a wisdom tooth has partially emerged, with symptoms such as:

  • Pain and swelling in the jaw.
  • Swollen gums.
  • Bleeding gums.
  • Bad taste in your mouth.
  • Bad breath.
  • Difficulty opening your mouth.

If an infection develops around a wisdom tooth, it can spread through your body, damaging vital organs.

When should I get my wisdom teeth extracted?

Although wisdom teeth start to form around the age of 10, they usually appear much later, when we’re 17 to 25.

Even if you have no signs of wisdom teeth problems now, they may develop later when extraction can be more difficult.

That’s why it’s typically better to have wisdom teeth removed promptly, which can ensure safe extraction with limited damage to surrounding tissue.

The best time for wisdom teeth removal is when you’re a young adult and the tooth roots haven’t fully developed. There’s also more chance of fast recovery.

As we get older, wisdom teeth surgery becomes more complex, recovery is more difficult, and the risk of complications is greater.

The wisdom teeth extraction procedure

Fully emerged wisdom teeth can be extracted relatively easily, particularly before the teeth have fully developed their roots.

Misaligned or impacted wisdom teeth can make the procedure more difficult. In some cases, a wisdom tooth may have to be extracted piece by piece.

Usually removing a wisdom tooth involves making an incision in the gum to remove the tooth, but if your problem tooth is in a difficult position, or has long or curly roots (which we will detect in your X-Ray) then a surgical extraction may be recommended, where the wisdom tooth itself may need to be cut to enable its extraction. Although sometimes complicated, the procedure is virtually pain-free for the patient, under local anesthesia and dental sedation.

After surgery it is common to experience some swelling and mild discomfort, but we will recommend the appropriate pain management and care methods to ease you through your recovery.

If wisdom tooth (or any dental) pain is causing you trouble, don’t wait and suffer. Don’t hesitate to contact us. We are open from 10am to 7pm, and available six days per week, including weekends and holidays for emergency appointments. Call us on (02) 9601-7534.
